Hi [Preemie-l Member],
I seem to remember our speech therapist telling us that our daughter, Brooke, may stall in her speech development or quit saying some newly acquired words around the age that she becomes more mobile. Something about switching the focus on one to focus on the other...Looking at the age of your daughter, if I remember right that was the age my daughter started walking - and walking was a big "To Do". She never really did slow down too much on her speech though, maybe a 'stall' for a bit. Also, when my daughter was just developing her speech, she would use some words for a while as if to practice them, and then go back to communicating the way she used to before she knew the words. She would go back and worth before they stuck. Sometimes, she would use a batch of words and then drop them to work on a new batch of words.
Is your daughter starting to develop dramatic mobility from where she was? Are these new words she is dropping? Has she dropped other words only to use them later?
Just some thoughts to help you clarify - and if you need it - ammunition for when/if your doc attempts to blow of your concerns. I think it can be common for children to drop newly acquired words for a short period of time as part of the learning process. However, two months seems long especially if Bethany hasn't replaced the 'lost' words with any other words. If you feel there is something more going on 'when in doubt, check it out' is the mantra for the pregnancy after a preemie group and works well with the preemies growing outside of the womb, too (smile). As has already been mentioned, a true regression can indicate other issues and should be investigated.
Keep us updated. Sincerely, Lauren - Mom to Brooke (born 26.5wks now over 2 1/2 - wow) and Brandon (born 38wks now 7 months) |
