Oh [Preemie-l Member],
I am sorry your daughter has RSV. It is terrible!! I too thought it wasn't going to be bad at all if we got RSV at this point. My daughter will be three in less than a month. What a slap in the face. We got RSV shots two winters in a row. This was our first winter without the shots...oh well.
Poor baby, coughing so hard she is throwing up...poor mommy...I know you can't be getting a lot of sleep.
Just wanted to pass on that what we do with our daughter is put her in our lap and blow the albuterol under her nose and in front of her mouth while she watches a special show (baby Einstein or other cartoons). She likes the snuggle and the show and will usually put up with it long enough to finish the treatment. She likes to hold it herself and if she does it 'right' we tell her she can do it herself. Ever since she was an infant she never tolerated the mask. (Although after a while she succumbed to it in the hospital a couple weeks ago).
The other thing I wanted to pass to you and others who have RSV right now was that the respiratory therapists used to do 'percussion' on Brooke's chest and back to loosen up the junk in her chest thereby allowing her to cough up the stuff. The respiratory therapists used some kind of mask with a soft edge, but it would be almost as good to use your hand. Cup your hand and pound (firm, but gentle - not hard) on her chest and back where her lungs are. It will make a fairly loud drum sound. Doing this regularly, like every 2 - 4 hrs for 10 minutes or so will help loosen up some of the junk in her chest. The faster she can cough it up and out, the quicker she'll recover.
Hopefully, the virus will pass soon.
