Hi [Preemie-l Member],
Thanks for posting the study on Albuterol vs. Xopenex. I have been in a
quandary over which one to give my daughter for a couple years! Therefore,
this kind of study is interesting and relevant for my interests.
However, my personal experience is the opposite of what they have concluded.
I found Xopenex to not be effective at all for my daughter. I have had to
revert back to Albuterol which was a difficult choice for me given that she
seemed to have had some kind of neurological response to high dosages of
albuterol. I say high dosages but well within the standard dosage amount of:
a treatment every 4-6 hours as needed. Now, I won't give her any more than a
treatment or two (if desperate) in a day. So far...this has been sufficient
for our needs...but I live in fear of a more acute attack in the future
where I am faced with giving her a treatment of xopenex which seemed to be
virtually ineffective in past experiences, or high dosages of albuterol
which are effective for her respiratory issues, but which seem to cause or
bring on myoclonic-type behavior.
It is possible that she has outgrown this behavior or possible that it was
pure coincidence that her myoclonic behavior showed up with the increased
amounts of albuterol and disappeared when I stopped giving her
albuterol...but until proven otherwise, I still live with the assumption
that they are related.
Anyway, has anyone else felt that Xopenex wasn't as effective as albuterol -
or does my daughter just have a unique response to both of these drugs? Is
there a third alternative?
